Keynote Address
Dr. Danny Welch
Dr. Welch is Professor and the founding chair of the Department of Cancer Biology at The University of Kansas Medical Center. He is also Associate Director for Education and Career Development at the University of Kansas Cancer Center, a Kansas Bioscience Authority Eminent Scholar and sits on the METAvivor Scientific Advisory Board.
Dr. Welch is currently Vice-president and Treasurer on the Board of Directors for the Cancer Biology Training Consortium. He is past president of the Metastasis Research Society, past chair of the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute Cancer Genetics Study Section, and a former board member for the American Cancer Society and is actively involved with the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR).
Dr. Welch’s lab focuses on the biology and genetics of cancer metastasis. His lab has developed and characterized many widely used metastasis models, discovering 8 of the 30 known metastasis suppressors. Recently, his lab has defined roles for the mitochondria in metastasis and is focusing on understanding the mechanisms responsible. The latter work is the focus of a 2022 METAvivor research grant presented by the Pittsburgh Metsquerade in honor of members: Jill Griffin, Andrea Dimond, Lori Czyzewski, and Sophia Holland.
